Yesterday, several prominent artificial intelligence (AI) providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, experienced simultaneous outages. This led to downtime for their popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. OpenAI confirmed a "routing error" was responsible for its service interruption, which started around 3:43 PM BST and was resolved within an hour. Anthropic reported a "partial outage" affecting its Claude Mythos, Fable, and Opus models, identifying and deploying a fix shortly after. xAI, the parent company of Grok, attributed its issues to an "outage at our Memphis compute center".
While multiple outages in the same sector often point to a shared third-party service provider, neither OpenAI nor Anthropic explicitly cited an external cause. However, xAI apologised to its "impacted compute partners", noting a compute partnership with SpaceX that Anthropic also shares. Major internet infrastructure providers like Cloudflare, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure did not report any related outages.
This incident highlights the growing reliance businesses and individuals have on these large language models (LLMs), the technology behind chatbots like ChatGPT. For those using AI tools for event planning, marketing, or content creation, even short periods of downtime can disrupt workflows. It underscores the importance of understanding the potential fragility of cloud-based AI services. While these outages were brief, they serve as a reminder that even advanced AI systems can be susceptible to technical glitches, similar to any other digital service you might rely on. For now, there is no specific action needed other than being aware that outages can and do happen, and to factor that into your AI tool usage.
