Uber launches self-driving taxis in London

Uber has launched its first self-driving taxis in London, making it the first company to offer robotaxi services in the UK capital. From Thursday, 3rd September 2026, customers can book these autonomous minicabs through the Uber app.

Initially, there are 15 self-driving vehicles available, and each one must have a human safety driver behind the wheel. This driver is there to take control if anything unexpected happens. For now, the fare for a robotaxi ride is the same as a standard UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort journey, with the price shown upfront in the app.

The self-driving cars, which are Ford Mustang electric vehicles, use technology from UK tech firm Wayve. This AI system analyses real-time data from sensors to determine the car's actions, rather than being pre-programmed. Zoe Kleinman from the BBC was one of the first journalists to experience a ride, noting it was mostly smooth but that the safety driver did intervene briefly when a van door opened unexpectedly.

Why this matters

This is a tangible step forward for autonomous vehicles in a major UK city. While there's still a human safety driver involved, it means that robotaxis are no longer just a concept; they are now a real-world service. For those in the events industry, this is an important development to watch. It signals a shift in urban transport infrastructure that could eventually impact how attendees travel to events, how staff are transported, and even how event logistics are managed. As the technology matures and regulations adapt, we might see autonomous vehicles playing a larger role in event planning, potentially offering new options for transport efficiency and accessibility. For now, it's a significant marker of progress in AI's application in daily life.
